The bakery is amazing. Kolaches, cinnamon rolls, Amish noodles, apricot bread ... it's all very, very good. The staff is friendly and the restrooms are clean! What more could you ask for? I can't wait to go back.

Stopped here because it's in La Grange. Thought Billy, Dusty, and Frank might be around somewhere.(get it?) Anyway, had to check out Weikel's because of the bakery. Boy, was I pleased. Huge selection of kolaches, cookies, cakes, everything you expect from a Czech bakery. We got apple kolaches but I'm going back tomorrow to try the Honey Bees. The store also has a deli and of course, some groceries. Great place to stop when your sweet tooth says Feed Me!

Almost 5 stars and definitely worth the longish detour from San Antonio to Houston. I'm only docking it for not having better coffee - which would have heightened the whole kolache experience. :) we tried the strawberry and apricot. Both delicious. Almost tempted to get a cinnamon roll. We resisted, but we will be back. We brought an apple pie home for friends ($11). They have other great Texas gift items like jams and pecans and homemade pastas.

Really good kolaches here, and the place is very nice and clean

Another place to stop that also has clean bathrooms (hear that Buccee's). Although I must say it's not as big as Buccees. They have a deli and bakery which looks pretty good. Plus there's a store inside a store which specializes in women's clothing, candles, soap and children's toys. Weikel's another stop on the list on Highway 71 if you don't want to deal with Buccee's or Hruska's which are always crowded. By the way, it's in the Shell station, it may be hard to find at first.

What's the Fuss About? There is nothing necessarily wrong with Weikel's, but then there's not much right either. It is just a big store behind some gas pumps. At one end is a bakery counter with kolaches and other bakery items for sale. While they seem to be popular with lots of locals stopping in to buy a boxful, we couldn't understand why. A kolache is just a sqare of pastry with a depression in the middle. Some kind of fruit or cheese is placed in the depression. The fillings all appeared a bit too day-glo bright and everything looked like it would be tooth-achingly sweet. We chose the apricot since it looked like some real apricots were in the filling. It was...OK, nothing special, meh. I absolutely love bakery items, especially pastries. But this didn't do it for us at all.

I mean...it's Weikels! Kolaches! Who doesn't like this place!?! Any road trip to Houston is not the same without a stop at this bakery. It's a must stop while road tripping.

They had good choice of kolached and pecan pie. Cute gas station with kolaches and deli.

This place is a little piece of heaven in the middle of nowhere. Their danishes and kolaches are so yummy, but their rice krispy treats are TO DIE FOR! I stop here every single time I'm on my way home from Austin. My only complaint is you get absolutely no cell phone reception as soon as you pull into the parking lot.

  • Robert B.

Wow. First timer here and I have had kolaches before. These are by far the best. The sausage jalapeño nod cheese infused kolache is fantastic. The dough used for roll. Super soft. Plus a touch of sweetness. The ham pepper jack kolache is a smoked rolled piece of deli inside the soft sweet roll. Really good highly recommend the stop if you're in the area.

Do you remember the movie Forrest Gump where Forrest and his friend Bubba were talking about shrimp? Bubba talked or five minutes about the various ways to cook shrimp. Well...Weikel's has about the same number of fruit kolaches. After visiting the extremely clean restrooms, I went over to the kolache counter and looked at the long list of kolache types. I ordered a cream cheese and peach kolache, but it was a Sunday afternoon, and they were out. I did get a regular peach kolache, and it was delicious. The bread was light and sweet...perfect snack. Weikel'a also has tasty cookies. Expect the same products for sale as Buc-ees...Texas preserves, nuts, jerky, candy, etc. We grabbed a package of sausage and cheese kolaches from a display rack and took them home to eat the next morning. They were still fresh and delicious the next day. My wife prefers nearby Hruska's in nearby Ellinger, but I like Weikel's. Although I am a Buc-ees fan, it is nice to see a worthy alternative in LaGrange. I can't wait to go back to try a different kolache.

Let me tell ya.....Yummy yummy for your tummy I come from a Czech ( my mama) & I have had A lot of Kolache's,Even though these are not like Grandmas ( the dough). I have to give a huge Shout Out too the bakers in the bakery& the owners & managers. The Kolache's here are Great! They even put enough filling in them& top them with the right amount of popisika.,,...which makes them so So Tasty & wanting too come back for more.

Kolaches! They are wonderful. My wife had a friend long ago in Nebraska who made these and she said they are as she remembered. The breakfast tacos are great and the Taco Soup tasted home-made. What a great roadside discovery. If you are here, pull in, sit a spell and indulge!

    (5)
  • Lisa F.

Discovered the breakfast tacos! Worth the $2.50 each. Great tortillas and they seem fresh even at 11 AM on a Saturday morning!

Quick TIps: On your way from Houston to Austin or vice versa? Skip Hruska's and come here! Delicious fruit and chocolate kolaches - I have brought them to parties and people enjoyed the dozen. The sausage and cheese kolache is good. The chocolate chip cookies are also a good choice. There is also a coupon online for a free pastry! Food: I would skip the sausage jalapeño and cheese. The sausage egg and cheese burrito is also good. They also have a milkshake machine that my husband loves. Service: Great smiling service. You can pump your gas while you are here.

Love Weikel's. Cute little store and fresh made kolaches. Bathrooms are as clean as Bucees, which is a big deal :)

Clean, well attended and employees that are friendly. Bakery has the best kolaches and my favorite is the poppy seed roll topped with coconut and pecans....to die for! Super clean bathrooms too.

It had been a few years since I stopped at Weikel's in LaGrange. The last time I stopped in was before the remodel, approximately around 2008. Being from Austin and living in Waco for a few years I have had the pleasure of enjoying many kolaches along vast stretches of TX highways. Much to memory, there must have been a reason I have not visited the bakery more often. The kolaches were nothing above average and the food that we ordered was nothing to write home about. If you are commuting between ATX and HOU, stop 10 minutes down the road at Hruskas. Ofcourse none of those places hold a candle to the Czech Stop in West, TX but that is far out f the way. Sandwiches ordered for take out; philly cheese, PB & J, Grilled Cheese. Also, nothing special there. My philly cheese did have a massive amount of bread and a few pieces of meat to go with it. What did surprise me about the bakery is the lack of friendliness of a mom and pop establishment. Apparently my daughter needs to know what she wants before ordering and cannot ask questions to the counter help. Bottom line: don't be fooled by this "family bakery", keep driving.

What can I say ..... "WE GOTCHA KOLACHE" and a whole lot more! Clean store and restrooms, friendly service, HUGE selection and a boutique! What more do you need??

Clean restrooms without the crowds at Buccee's. Easy on off especially for east bound drivers.

Cream Cheese Kolache...the three best words in the czech/english language....I need to go on a low carb diet now... bacon!

The Kolaches are great. But I wanted to try their deli. Had the Turkey sandwich, toasted. It was fantastic! Great stop to make when between Austin and Houston.

Last trip from Austin to Houston, we tried the place in Ellinger, and it was fine. This time we figured we'd give the competition a whirl, and boy was I glad we did! Weikel's will be the new standard stop on this trip. The kolache were light-years better, the dough was heavenly. The poppy seed filling just perfect. Also had a sausage and cheese pig-in-a-blanket. Yes, the dough is kind of sweet for this pastry, but it was still very enjoyable. My kids had cinnamon rolls which they said were great. Prices were very reasonable. My only regret, like others, was that I didn't bite into one until we were already driving down 71. If I had in the store, I would have certainly picked up more!!! Yum!

This is the nicest, cleanest, and best rest stop in La Grange. The bathrooms are spotless and up to date with jet air hand dryers. The food is fresh including homemade tortillas, breakfast burrito's, any flavor kolache's, and as many pickled veggies as your mind can fathom. It's without a doubt the freshest bakery I have been in compared to West Czech Stop, Collin St. Bakery, and many others.

    (5)
  • Thomas B.

I love stopping at this place on my way to or back from Houston. They have incredible deli ham for some reason. I love the tortillas they use on their breakfast tacos; they seem like they are freshly made and are thin and tasty. I always order a ham and cheese breakfast taco and just love it to death. I've even thought of driving the 60 miles on a Sunday morning just to get another one and then turn around and come back to Austin. That's how good it is.

Remember when tis place was BONTONS!!! Man, this place is amazing. There are 2 places we stop NO MATTER WHAT, when we are traveling on 71 or to Dallas, and Weikels is one of them. Hands down, a must. We get the Honey Bees, Cheese Kolaches (which imo are to die for) and the Cinnamon Rolls (even though I do not like rasins!) DAMN good stuff! Pricey, a bit. Each of the above is about $8 a pack, and you get 6 per pack. But they are well worth it. OH-- and I concur with Keely! The bathrooms ARE nice! LOL Tile from floor to ceiling, so you have your own stall, AND they have DYSON hand dryers. Wassup!!!!! LOL Nice, big and clean. You can trust your kids to touch a wall if they had to.

M: I brought some kolaches for you and Boyfriend/Fiancée/You-Might-As-Well-Be-Married-Anyway while I'm staying with y'all. A: Aw thanks Buddy Bears! ... A: Are you sure these are kolaches?? M: Yeah, since the package reads 'Assorted Kolaches' A: These are kolaches. M: Yeah. A: These are bread, with filling, and cream cheese stuff. M: Yeah. A: They don't put meat in 'em or nothin? M: Nope. A: Thanks but I'm not big on the sweets, and Boyfriend's butt does *not* need the sugar. Here, you can take them with you for breakfast in Austin. Note to self: pick up the pigs-in-a-blanket as well as sweet varieties when bringing edible gifts of gratitude to my homeboys-n-girls in Houston. They love 'em! +1 star cashier to me upon checkout: 'Nice scarf'

The bakery was doing a brisk business and we were not to miss grabbing some kolaches. Amazing bread dough and amazing kolaches. All at a very reasonable price. Breakfast for 2 was less than 8$

One of my favorite stops along the Kolache Trail. I love their ham & pepper jack kolaches. Their sandwiches are also excellent. Clean bathrooms & good coffee.

Every time I go to Austin I have to stop by Weikel's for their great Cream Cheese Kolache!

  • Nikko P.

great kolaches. people are always going to debate weikel's vs hruska kolaches. i like them both, but weikel's wins because of their sausage jalapeno & cheese kolaches. it's all mixed into the sausage while at hruska's it's all seperate. do not like seperate

  • Mary B.

Best kolaches (the "real" kind -- Czech, fruit, cream cheese) we've found within miles so far, and we have tried other places. Better than Hruska's. Definitely better than Bucee's. Better than a place in Schulenburg that runs out too early anyway. And better than a place in Katy. Best kolaches, hands down. And wide variety of flavors, not just the popular ones. Prune, poppyseed. I have yet to try their newest - chocolate and chocolate cream. I just found their page on FB too. About to post their awesome photo here.

The reason to stop here: KOLACHES. I've stopped here three times on the way to/from Austin from Houston. I really like their sweet bread on their sausage kolaches (pigs in a blanket). I try to remember to stop there to get a few as a snack, it's always a welcome break! Make sure to get a pack of them for later, you'll be kicking yourself if you don't. I've tried their cookies and they are some of my husband's favorites. He says they are very very buttery, just like he likes them. The sour cream kolaches get rave reviews from others, but I guess they just aren't my thing. I got a 6 pack, ate one and left the rest to sit there. I do like their cinnamon rolls, but make sure to get the fresh ones. The previously frozen ones just aren't as good. Everything there is better fresh. Get there early to get the best selection and watch out for bees in the parking lot trash cans.

The food choices here were a solid three stars. The menu included a loaded BBQ baked potato, grilled cheese, Porker sandwich (chopped BBQ pork with cole slaw), and Philly Cheesesteak sandwich. There were some other menu items too, but those were the highlights. Food was good, but the kolaches were better (probably 5 stars). It gets the job done.

I've been going to Weikel's since my sister started school at UT (2002) and it's changed a lot since then! Best kolaches ever (sausage/jalapeno/cheese) - and FYI the cheese and jalapenos are INSIDE the sausage so you didn't get ripped off, just take a bite to see the goods. I can eat 6 of these in one sitting. My mom is obsessed with getting loaves of bread from here because they're baked fresh every day and they are huge. It's always a tough decision between stopping at Weikel's or Hruska's on the way to/from Austin on 71, but I think Weikel's wins my vote even though you have to get off the highway to get to it. Plus I loooove saying the word Weikel's.

  • Mark H.

Down a star...since Weikel's has gone 'Megaplex' with its huge new remodeled store, I think the service and kolaches have suffered a bit. I still stop her on the way to Houston. There are more gasoline pumps but fuel prices are higher by 10-15 cents/gallon than nearby stations. Lots of Chinese low-wage goods and tchotckes for sale in the 'Clothing' area of the new huge store. :-(

My usual round trip between Sugar Land and Austin when driving involes a pit stop at Hruska both ways. Yesterday on the drive back from Austin my wife and I decided to stop at Weikel's intead of Hruska due to the good reviews in Yelp. We brought sausage and cheese kolaches to try. The dough was sweeter than Hruska and sauage link was used intead of pan sausage as at Hruska. We liked it a lot. My wife also brought pecan log and pumkin pie to try at home. They were very good also. The coffee was good and cheap. Most important of all, the restrooms were clean. Hruska and Weikel have their own unique recipes of kolaches and we enjoyed both. So we can't pick one over the other. Our solution is to stop at Hruska on the way to Austin and stop at Weikel's on the way back to Sugar Land.

We travel this road often, however, we never make the exit to stop, until last month. My husband stopped off and picked up a half dozen kolaches for our neighbor who told him about Weikel's and picked us up 3, um, we are 5 so WTH!? I wasn't with him at the time, so I didn't get a say in how many he got for us. So on a different trip home I made him stop again, because dang it I wanted MY OWN KOLACHE:-) After hem hawing and oogling on which flavors to get, the very nice counter attendant recommended I check out the racks of pre-packaged kolaches. I found a six pack and asked her to tell me what flavors were in it, and she did, very nicely. Then I asked if she had anymore chocolate cream kolaches and she said they were out - bummer - that's what I came for. But low and behold there was one last pkg on the rack I found and grabbed really quick. These were baked and packed that morning. Then my husband returns from the bathroom and starts his hem hawing and oogling. So we've sucked up about 5 minutes of her time..no sweat, there wasn't anyone else at the counter looking for help. My husband asks her if she gets tired of indecisive people like us and she says..if i can be honest? it's people like you that make me wanna come around the counter and slap the shit out of you!!! OMG we were laughing so hard. My husband told her he could relate from his butcher counter days. We made a FAST decision on the rest of our order and walked away laughing with her telling us how awesome we were. Really loved her attitude, and the kolaches are ridiculously good. I only wish we hadn't stopped at Mikeska BBQ and gotten lunch at Weikel's instead- their lunch counter had some really delicious looking stuff.

Awesome rest stop with cool gifts, everything you can think of that you need when going on a road trip, fresh baked goodies and fresh made sandwiches (not subway style). Great southern goodies like pickled okra!! CLEAN BATHROOMS!!!

  • Dave S.

Now, we're getting there...you remember what I said about the Kolache Factory. Well, with a name like Weikel's, you *know* you're getting the real thing. I pass through La Grange every time I head south to see my son, and it's pretty much the mid-way point. So, I hafta stop somewhere for a snack. This is THE place to stop. You can't just go in and say "gimme this or that". Take some time and peruse their goodies. And it'll take some time. It's well worth it. Next weekend, it'll be Prasek's.

  • Jeffrey C.

No trip back from Austin is really complete unless you stop by Weikel's Bakery and pick up some of their Texas-famous kolaches. They've upgraded the storefront to look like one of those mega-gas stations. I suppose you can blame the Buc-ee's cult for that phenomenon. I miss the old wooden shack that used to house Weikel's, but the new place still has the same old awesome kolaches. The cream cheese is my all-time go-to, but they have a surplus of fruit-flavored bad boys that taste just as good. My dad is a sucker for the honey bee rolls, which aren't too shabby as well. Pick up a six-pack, and your stomach will thank you for a delicious breakfast all week long.

I was introduced to thise place several years ago by a coworker on our way to Houston. It was super good. Back in May, on my way to New Orleans, we were heading down 71 and I was looking for this place from the road and couldn't find it. It looked like it had been demolished and a new gas station put in. Well this past weekend, on my way to Houston, I saw the highway sign, and figured I would pull off and check it out. To my surprise, it WAS the new gas station. The whole building had been rebuilt, and was much nicer and bigger. Same great food. I certainly pigged out on a few of the goodie. Hands down a "On the way to Houston" favorite! Check it out if you ever get a chance! Well worth it and the prices are amazing!

I found heaven... it's in the middle of No Where, TX. I can't even think of where to begin in this review, my mouth is watering and my hands want to reach for the keys and drive very fast now!!! Stopped here kinda by accident- a little hungry and needed a bathroom real bad! I found the bathroom, along with the best pastries, and kolaches in No Where, TX. I couldn't resist trying several different treats. The cinnamon rolls were as big as my face, the pastry was fluffy, and coated with the perfect combination of sugar and cinnamon. The kolaches both meat and fruit were worthy of a 10 star rating. I purchased a few extra to give to my family, but oops... they ended up not making it the rest of the way. I couldn't resist eating the whole half dozen! Now anytime my family drives up from SETexas they know where to stop and grab a present for their favorite Aunt in Austin!

  • Terry H.

These kolaches would be great even without the filling! So many pastries hide a bad dough recipe under topppings. But not here. As good as the dough is, it is complemented by an extremely generous portion of fruity filling. (make mine cherry cream, pls). Once you try their kolaches you'll never go back to that place in West, TX (whose kolaches I personally don't care for).. Overall, one of the best patry experiences I've ever had.

  • Jul P.

The only thing wrong with Weikel's is that they won't let me live there, which is probably good, because if I did, my badankadank would be too fat to fit out the doors. I was disappointed that they don't sell their poppyseed filling by the trough. It is, simply, heavenly. If I ever find myself on Death Row, Weikel's poppy seed pockets will be on my Last Meal menu.

Great place to stop. They sell all sorts of kolaches. They usually have breakfast tacos by the front registers. Weikel's is a crowd pleaser.

Am I doing it wrong? I am one of those people from not-central Texas and hadn't heard of kolaches before my cousin gave me one from Kolache Factory in Houston. Tasty! Like a little bao, but with King's Hawaiian bread, and filled with random stuff. Why don't we have these in California?? So the next day, on my drive from Houston to Austin, I thought I'd stop at Weikel's because of all the reviews. Apparently the sweet kolaches are the things to get here. I really did enjoy them- got the cream cheese, cherry-cream cheese, chocolate, and blueberry- but they also sort of just taste like danishes from the store? I guess I wanted to SUPER LOVE them but I just liked them instead. Maybe I should've gone for the savory ones. In other news, the bathrooms/rest of the store really are great, and the gas was reasonably priced to boot! I didn't know what I wanted when I walked up to the counter, so I just asked the woman what the most popular was: "cream cheese". Okay, one of those. Then... hm... "do you want chocolate?" Oh! Great! Okay then! Thank you, kolache lady! She chose all my flavors for me, which was awesome. Definitely I'll stop by again (and try Hruska's too) and try the savory ones.

The word "Bakery" caught my eye while driving down 71 on my way back from Austin. I almost killed some animals while swerving to the exit lane, but honestly I think it would have been worth a few animals' lives. Just a few miles north of Hruska's (which was my next stop), but not too many people know about or have heard of Mikiel's. In my opinion, I think they should join forces and take over the world with Kolaches. It's in a gas station but DON'T LET THAT FOOL YOU. You walk in and there's fresh baked goodness everywhere. Cinnamon rolls, cookies, kolaches, pies, nomnomnom. But I digress.. For the sweet kolaches, anything with cream cheese is zzzing! I tried the Cherry Cream Cheese kolache. Still soft and warm, and sprinkled with butter crumbles on top. Their savory kolaches aren't as good as Hruska's, but I think I like the sweet kolaches here better. Again, these are not like Shipley's kolaches.. these are more open-faced and rustic, much like Hruskas.

I had the good fortune of passing through LG again yesterday so I of course stopped in for a jalapeno and cheese sausage kolache. On the way back through a few hours later I ordered my favorite sandwhich and picked up some Honey Bees. Stopping at Bon Ton during a road trip makes any road trip a great road trip. I am told the new location will be open the first of the new year. It's huge and will make the stop even more convenient. I am sure with the new and larger building that production will increase as well. Great for everyone without that "sold out" feeling.

Sweet baby Jesus, you could seriously become diabetic in one gorge-fest here. Trying to do the vegetarian thing so I ordered a pimento cheese sammich on wheat with all the veggies. Pretty good. I then found a loaf of bread for sale and read the ingredients. SUGAR!!!! Shit's in everything. To be a smart-ass I got my husband a COLOSSAL chocolate/cream cheese kolache the size of a dinner plate. So much for that. He ate the whole damn thing when I presented it to him at home. Didn't even flinch. I got some goat milk products near the register and love those. I didn't visit the store since I was in a coma from all the carbs I consumed. Pretty neat place to stop and visit. Bring insulin...sugar in everything there.

Okay, so let's just get this out of the way - The bathrooms here are pretty sweet. I always make a bathroom stop here on my way from Houston to Austin. I think it's pretty awesome that the handicap/family friendly stall has a changing table and sink as well. A few years ago this wouldn't have mattered, but a 2 year old and 2 month old later, I can totally dig that feature. I married a German/Czech guy whose granny used to make homemade kolaches for every family gathering. I'd like to think that I know my ethnic baked goods pretty well now. That being said, I love theirs! The cottage cheese danish and apricot kolache are my current favs. I topped my danish with fresh strawberries when I got home. Delish!! My husband can't get enough of the poppy seed kolache. It's always been his pick. I tried their new chocolate kolache and I wasn't impressed. I didn't even finish it. I love their coffee set-up. I can always count on hot decaf and a variety of different creamers. (Why is decent decaf so hard to find?) If I want to live a little, the selection on the cappuccino, latte, etc machine is nice as well. Last time we were there I got my daughter a grilled cheese sandwich that came with a little baggie of potato chips. I don't know...I thought it was a pretty cute little lunch! The grilled cheese was pretty darn good too. No complaints there! The little shopping area is nice. I'm always tempted by the adorable children's items, but never looking to spend quite that much cash. This is a must stop place on our trips between Austin and Houston.

On our kolache quest, we had to stop at Weikel's in order to compare it to Hruska's in the kolache showdown of the Czech towns to see who would win it out in the battle. I must say that this country general store had lots of stuff to over stimulate the long road trippers with their cool milkshake machine and fun overly sugar syrup coffee cappuccino fountain with flavors like Almond Joy, Hershey Carmel, and York peppermint patti. But back on track to the kolaches. We showed up late on a Sunday afternoon so the pickins were slim compared the other place. I stuck with the sausage cheese and jalapeño kolache so I could offer a fair taste tasting assessment and picked the most random flavor you would ever thing to make into a Kolache and that is Prune. No I don't have issues with my digestive track, but I was curious so it's so random and odd to see that flavor that I wanted to try it. The BF got ham and pepper jack cheese kolache and the cottage cheese/ tapioca pocket kolache. You order at the counter and the person writes down your order on a card that you take to the cashier. BTW, you heat up your own kolaches in a small microwave on the side. My first thought when biting into my sausages one was that it tasted like a pig in a blanket because the bread tasted like a soft hot dog bun. There wasn't any sweetness to the bread but it was fresh with remnants of lighted powered flour on parts of the outside. The sausage was a link and was a pretty good size. I guess it's all a matter of preference if you want a sweet dough pastry bun for your kolache or a more soft flour bun instead wrapped around your goods. BF's ham a pepper jack was pretty good but his cheese pocket was definitely different because it had cinnamon and sugar sprinkled on the outside of the bun. They weren't bad buys for the price and I'm still glad I came to see the different styles of kolaches, but I know where I'll be getting mine from now on. BTW, the prune kolache didn't really have any distinct flavors just a standard sugary jelly like substance.

I'm of Czech heritage and grew up eating Kolaches (pastries with a fruit filling) from local Czech bakeries. Austin has all kinds of great food but great Kolaches is one thing I have yet to find. If I'm ever near La Grange, I always stop and buy Kolaches here. They are very good and have all the traditional types of fillings as well as some non-traditional ones. Don't be fooled by the looks as it seems to be a gas station and convenience store. Go on it and each a couple of Kolaches. You won't be disappointed.

Weikel's was a surprise for me. I was making time early Sunday morning, and I calculated that at the rate I was beating my GPS's estimated time, I had about 7 minutes to get some breakfast. I saw a billboard for Weikel's and was uncertain... is it close enough to the highway? I don't have time to drive off even a little ways, I need something right on the way. Fortunately, when the exit came I could see the place from 71. I quickly zipped off, hurried in, and went straight to the bakery section of the gas station/convenience store. Now ... when I go to a place that sells tofu, I'm kind of lost. I don't know the lingo, the terms... I know "tofu" and not much more. I do not have this problem when I go to a place that sells kolaches. Jalapeño. Sausage. Cheese. This is "my kolache." I ordered with certainty and authority. I got a half-dozen. Fresh from the oven where they steamed up the bag. It was large-ish palm-sized kolache with the peppers in the sausage. Good bread, good sausage and very fresh. Between breakfast and an after-lunch snack, I killed the whole bag. Defnintely planning on stopping there again next time I'm on my way to Columbus in the morning.

So first of all, it's just ludicrous that Central Texas is the only place on the planet where you can find kolaches. People in other states haven't even heard of them. Those poor, poor people. I find myself driving through LaGrange frequently for work and between Austin (home) and Houston (parents' home). In this unlikely place, there exists a bakery--an institution--called Weikel's. For the longest time, this bakery had the appearance of an old gas station convenience store, which was fine. It kinda added some soul to the place. In any case, I hadn't been for a few months, and I dropped in today to find a completely new, very large building that resembles a Buc-ee's inside and out. However, the only part I care about is the bakery counter. Weikel's has got, hands down, the best kolaches in Central Texas. The bread is extra doughy with a hint of sweetness, and the fillings are all delicious. My favorite: sausage, jalapeno, and cheese. Yumm! Buy a couple for the road, or buy a package of them to take home. They freeze and reheat really well. Also, Weikel's does great sandwiches for lunch, and their handmade dried noodles are great for soups! There's still some construction going on, but it looks like it'll be completely done soon. Congrats on the new look, Weikel's! Y'all deserve it!

Authentic and delicious kolaches, as prior reviewers have mentioned. Worth a stop even if you're not hungry right then. Family-owned with clean bathrooms, friendly staff, and, oh yeah, everything else they have on the menu is also high-quality tastiness. I love coming here!

If you're driving from Austin to Houston (or, say, Bastrop to San Felipe) and you need a snack, you can either stop at this clean and inviting roadside haven for some very good freshly-made kolaches, or pull into some random crap-ass gas station for a Twinkie. The choice is yours!

We stopped at Weikels on the way back to Austin from La Grange. My friend raved on how great the kolaches were there. I must say she was right they are Fantastic.

CREAM CHEESE KOLACHE. That is all. Actually, I don't see too many people that don't know what they are looking for here. Walk in and inhale the carb heaven. Try the cookies! They're pretty nomalicious too.

No kolache will ever taste the same after getting one here. My favorite kolache place has always been Hruska's. I always make sure to stop when passing by. However, it has all changed ever since I tried a kolache from Weikel's. For those who have been to Hruska's, Weikel's is quite similar but on a smaller scale. You can pick up all sorts of things you would at Hurska's but they do have more food options. I noticed that they make sandwiches but the main thing here are still the kolaches. I have tried the sausage with jalapeno & cheddar and the cream cheese. The sausage one was very good with the right amount of sausage and cheddar inside. The cream cheese was exceptionally good, they didn't skimp out on the cream cheese. I think the main factor that separates these kolaches from others is the bread. The bread has this little sweetness that compliments the kolache. It balanced out the saltiness of the sausage and it just made the cream cheese taste even better! The bread really reminded me of those Hawaiian rolls you get at the grocery store. The best way to summarize these kolaches is that they're just pure goodness. If you're a fan of Hurska's, give this place a try. I'm sure you'll become an instant fan of Weikel's.

I frequently travel from Austin to Houston via Hwy 71 because of work and, whenever I have the time, I always try to make a stop at Weikel's (or The Bon Ton Bakery) on the way down. Like many other Czech gas-station bakeries throughout Texas (like Czech Stop in West and Hruska's a few miles south in Ellinger), Weikel's is famous kolaches. However, there are a couple of other items worth buying if you're in the bakery and don't want a kolache or feel like trying something a bit different. 1) The homemade bread is fantastic--particularly the wheat bread. Like many other items at Weikel's, this item frequently sells out by late afternoon, but if you're there and it's available, be sure and buy a couple of loaves. It has a nice yeast-y, homemade flavor and is excellent on its own, toasted, or in sandwiches. 2) The honeybees. It's Weikel's version of the sticky bun and is typically sold in packages of 6-8. Each "bee" is about 4"x4" in size and coated with a molasses-type syrup and then topped with nuts. If you're on a diet, well, it might be worth taking a break for one these things. Weikel's is slightly harder to get to than Hruska's (which is also on Hwy 71 and sells kolaches), but trust me when I say it's well worth the extra time.

Every time I am back in LG I get nostalgic for two sausage and cheese, and a chocolate milk. I always end up leaving weikels with more than I came in for. Everythings great, the bread, the sandwiches....the cream cheese kolaches. If still lived in Texas I would weigh at least 20 more pounds. People of the world please stop by weikels for some education on kolaches. I fear shipleys has destroyed the name by making people think it is a low quality weenie wrapped in bread....not even close, that shouldn't even be called a pig in the blanket. At weikels their pigs are real sausage wrapped in sweet, wonderful, kolache bread....and their real name is a klobisniki or something close to that.

To this day I get upset that people outside of La Grange, Texas, don't know a kolache from a pig in a blanket. *Insert HUGE sigh here*. To make matters worse, I noticed that there is even a product carried in the grocery stores now with a label saying "kolaches", when they are those little coctail sausages wrapped in bread. PEOPLE...those are NOT--I repeat--NOT kolaches...not even close. The closest thing to that little frozen concotion is a pig in a blanket...still not anything like the real deal, either. If you're wondering what a kolache actually is, and likewise, a pig in a blanket, and you find yourself somewhere on 71 & 77, exit and stop in at Weikel's...it's worth the extra 5-10 minutes. Having grown up in LG, my family went out to Weikel's every weekend and got kolaches and pigs. My favorite thing Weikel's sells (if y'all aren't from LG and stop in), are the ham with pepper jack (yum), and the sausage with jalepeno/cheddar. They're both in the same bread used in the pigs--amazing. Trust me, you won't find anything like these anywhere else...I know, because I moved away 11 years ago and have traveled extensively. Not even in other small towns (one of which located on I-35:) that claim a German/Czech bakery will you find such delicious homemade goodies. It's a dang good thing I don't live in LG anymore or I'd have to work out all day long to even attempt keeping off the weight I gain just from smelling the stuff. Still--it's totally worth it and you need to experience it for yourself.

I'm gushing with happiness! I just love this place. I've been stopping here for years beginning with the previous business (Bon Ton Bakery). Weikel's has enlarged and expanded from what was there previously. Maybe you just need gas but how could you not go in for a treat? So many kolaches, pies, sausages, jerky, fresh bread, even homemade dried noodles. Oddly, I don't think I've ever purchased gas here.

The bread alone is worth five stars. Take it home and fry it up with lots of butter, the way the old Bon Ton restaurant used to serve it. Fantastic!

Love this place, but they run our of cream cheese kolaches way too early. Why can't they make twice as much? I'm there often enough to know they always run out. I know I don't buy as much stuff when they're out, and almost every person I listen to when they order asks for the same thing - cream cheese koaches. MAKE MORE! I'm not a big fan of any of their meat kolaches. I really prefer when kolache meat is chopped; they go with whole slices which can often be chewey and cause you to pull out all the meat in one bite. Besides that, they leave a weird aftertaste in your mouth. Their white bread is really good, but it's not nearly as good as the bread you used to get at the Bon Ton. Unfortunately the Bon Ton's long gone, so Weikel's is about the best alternative in La Grange. Their cakes and cookies are good too. They sell many varieties of jerky, most of which are really good. I like Weikel's, I just think most of the reviewers are over-estimating how good their kolahces are. The cream cheese ones are darned good, but they always run out of them and they're really the only ones that are worth a darn in my opinion. The rest of their flavors (fruit and meat) are just average.

NOM NOM NOM NOM. This place is reason #1 I take 71 to Houston to see my mommy. If she has been good, I even grab a bag of ready to go assorted fruit kolache, or a loaf of bread. Love the pigs in a blanket, love the cottage cheese kolaches. I am forever in debt to my friend for introducing me to this place (and Polvo's, the man is truly a saint).

Great option for Kolache ordering online. Super fast shipping, reasonable prices, and no outrageous minimum order. The kolaches aren't as good as the ones I can get locally from an Amish bakery (these are a tad more industrial and have less crunch topping) but they are still tasty, and they ship.

These kolaches are the best. They are better than the ones found at Hruska's down the road in the speed trap town of Ellinger. They make a fine sandwich too...in case you want something savory. Hruska's has the burger, Weikel's doesn't have burgers but they do win out overall with the softest sweetest heavenly sausage rolls. I usually get apricot or peach and the cream cheese kolache too...which are crack laced. The carrot cake is moist and marvelous. Chocolate cake great. My mom and dad always appreciate it when I pick up an extra 6 pack of sausage kolaches when I am goin' that way...they do freeze well.

It's true. Their cream cheese kolaches are crave-worthy. In fact, they are so good that I am giving Weikel's 5 stars based on the simple perfection of that item. It's the softest, richest, tender yeast bread (so yeasty sometimes that it's on the edge of fermented), topped with a sweet/slightly sour cream cheese filling. I've never found them to be out of stock, and I've been there at all times of the day. I always leave stuffed. I've tried the other items and I'd say they are mixed. They make a cottage cheese kolache which I like in spite of the fact that I find it odd--but I see no reason to try it again--I'll just stick with the cream cheese from now on. The fruit-flavored kolaches are nice, but the fillings seem like they probably come out of a can. The poppyseed strudel was actually kind of horrid, with a strong almond extract flavoring (so overpowering I could actually taste the alcohol from the extract...I had to throw the strudel away). The carrot cake was very good, with a nice moist crumb. I also like the pigs-in-a-blanket, but not as much as the cream cheese kolache. In the end, it boils down to: just get the cream cheese kolache.

I discovered this gem years ago, and every time I'm out this far on 71, I HAVE TO STOP here for their Poppy Seed Rolls. Best I've ever had, and I've had 'em all over Texas. Like I've said, they are the Kolache Kings.. Because I don't have the chance to come here frequently, which is probably a good thing for my health, I stock up with an inexpensive assortment 6-pack. And a few extras fresh out the oven and into my watering mouth. If you like poppy seed rolls like I do, try their Poppy Seed Struedel. It's big and heavy, and they slice you off a chunk to sell it by weight. My eyes tend to get a little bigger than my stomach at this point and I end up with 2 pounds of poppy seed madness. I hope I don't get drug tested afterwards, because if there's any truth to that poppy seed muffin making you come up positive for opiates, then I'll be looking straight up smack-addled. The fruit and sausage varieties are excellent as well. I could spend all day here, eating the entire counter contents. Yes. I love them so.

Hands down, the best kolaches on the planet. Don't be fooled by the fact that it looks rather commercial and it is housed within a gas station. If you don't get a cream cheese kolache and a sausage kolache, your life will not be the same. While you are there, pick up some for your friends. Did I mention I like the cream cheese ones?

Highway 71 is the better route from Austin to Houston only if you're not going to/coming from the north side of Houston, and whenever I had the chance, I'd go this way. I used to love getting the ones with the central Texas jalapeno sausage and cheese (which are technically not called kolaches, but are a different Czech name). They can be a tad salty though. Just be careful because there are more 5-0 going this way! With 290, all you have to be careful about is Brenham :).

hmmm...wut's this kolache stuff??? i was told to get the pecan rice krispy treats. now im bummed i missed out :/ also tried the pecan cinnamon rolls. they were both fabulous! i was so afraid they'd be sickeningly sweet but they were perfect! leaves u enuff of a sweet tooth to have more! :D all in all, a really memorable texan experience. we were able to spot it off the freeway as "the bakery at shell gas station". i swore we wouldnt find it with a description like that, but there it was...a gas station sign and a bakery sign on the freeway. the folks inside were super nice. got to try all these pecan snacks and a breakfast taco (which i think is just like a mini-breakfast burrito).

I would say they have the best apple kolaches in Texas (and therefore the world) but I haven't tried kolaches from every bakery in Texas. Anyway, they really are perfect. The poppy seed kolaches are amazing as well. The bread is always perfectly soft.

Stopped in again on the way back from Houston. Same lady behind the kolache counter. She was incredibly rude and needs a major attitude adjustment. She kept pushing us to make our selection. And when we asked her about the packaged kolaches that said "previously frozen", she rudely barked that all their kolaches are freshly made each morning and the packaged ones were taken out of the freezer earlier in the day. WTF does that even mean??? Fresh and frozen are antonyms! We will not be coming back.

After taking the wrong road to Shiner, TX (I was the navigator) my older (not by much) sister and I went to Weikel's in what turned out to be an adventure driving around on the Farm to Market roads back to Austin. We missed the last tour at the Spoetzl brewery. Frowny face. I know. Gotta say. I wasn't impressed. Perhaps she built it up too much. I had a number of different treats but not-a-one tickled me in the right way. The kolaches were okay, I guess, but they tasted like the pastry part was lacking that goodness that contributes to weight gain. The cherry filling was good by itself but that's not what makes a pastry. The pigs-in-a-blanket were nothing special as well as these sandwichy type things that you're instructed to zap in the microwave for just a few seconds. The best part was two weeks later when I opened a package of beef jerky I got from there but it was from some other place called Prasek's Hillje Smokehouse. That, I would get again.

Excellent Kolaches! They have a good variety of fillings and never seem to run out. I also like the "cheese pockets" which are filled with cream cheese, cottage cheese and tapioca. As mentioned the pecan cinnamon rolls are great. The pigs are not bad, but I've had better. The sandwiches are pretty good and made on fresh bread. Cookies are good. I always stop and pick up a box of "house special" cookies for my grandmother when I'm heading home.

Weikel's is the best place to get kolaches in central Texas. Their cream cheese kolaches are to die for, and the other fruit flavors are good as well. Their sausage kolaches are only so-so. Their coconut cream pie is absolutely wonderful. There are always people in the store. It is popular, and worth the stop.
